To help maximise the quality and impact of the work of theAFS volunteer network, EFIL organises international seminars all over Europe. They are either funded by the European YouthFoundation (Council of Europe), European Youth Centres (Council of Europe) orthe Youth in Action Programme (European Commission). Some of the events werenot only organised, but also self-funded by EFIL/AFS.

The seminars are run by intercultural teams comprising EFILstaff members, expert volunteers from the Member Organisations as well astutors appointed by the European Youth Centres.

Linking national andEuropean advocacy work

Brussels, Belgium 15 – 19 December

This seminar was seeking to increase competence at nationallevel in the field of advocacy through the exchange of good practices, skillsdevelopment and learning about national and European structures andopportunities for networking. It aimed on improving the co-operationbetween national level organisations and their European umbrella organisations.

Governance and Leadership seminar

Stockholm, Sweden 26 – 29 August

What is volunteer leadership - how do volunteers lead volunteers? What aspects of leadership are worth exploring, on a personal aswell as organisational level? What are the responsibilities of an AFS board? And what can I personally do to bring forward my own organisation? These andother questions have been discussed at the Governance seminar in Sweden.


EFIL Volunteer Summer Summit on Learning across Generations

Zanka, Hungary 4 - 9 August

EFIL’s third Volunteer Summer Summit gathered 250 volunteersto discuss the topic “learning across generations”. All participants spent agreat and inspiring time in Hungary.

Progamme Directors Meeting

Sarajaevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina 1 – 5March
AFS Programme Directors met in Sarajevo to share best/worse practises related to AFS programmes, understand each other’s job realities and explore organisational similarities/differences. Besides, the participants had the chance to discuss current AFS issues and were updated about changes in partner development.


Training for local volunteers of developing organisations

Sarajaevo, Bosnia& Herzegovina26 – 28 February

This training course targeted new volunteers in rising AFS organisations ineastern and south eastern Europe providing them with skills and knowledge necessary to acomplish AFS volunteer tasks.


Global citizens of intercultural Europe – exploring the link between intercultural competence and Citizenship
Strasbourg, France 31 January – 7 February

This study session explored various concepts of European Citizenship and Global Responsibility and helped to increase the active and responsible participation of young people in their organisations and communities.
